Massive Tech Disruption Linked to Security Software Update

A widespread technical issue impacted Microsoft users globally, including South Africa, on 19 July 2024. The disruption is believed to be caused by an update from cybersecurity firm Crowd strike's antivirus software.

Many Windows users reported encountering the Blue Screen of Death, signifying a critical system error.

In South Africa, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) announced a temporary halt to updates on their FTSE indices due to the issue. "We are aware of the global problem and are awaiting a resolution," the JSE advised, urging investors to exercise caution while trading.

Online discussions on MyBroadBand forums revealed that at least one major South African insurance company was affected. Capitec, the country's largest bank by customer base, also experienced an outage linked to Crowd strike.

Fortunately, Capitec swiftly resolved the problem. "We're aware that customers faced difficulties accessing banking services earlier today," the bank acknowledged. "We're happy to report that all our banking services are now fully operational."

Capitec emphasized that the incident did not compromise customer accounts or personal information. "We prioritize customer service and deeply regret the inconvenience this disruption caused," they added. "We sincerely apologize and appreciate your patience during this challenging time."

The global tech issue impacted a wide range of sectors, including banks, media outlets, emergency services, government entities, and airlines.

Microsoft, in a recent update, identified affected services, including:

  • Power BI: Users may experience read-only mode as the company addresses the issue.
  • Microsoft Fabric: Similar to Power BI, users may encounter read-only mode while the problem is being resolved.
  • Microsoft Teams: Certain functionalities, such as presence, group chats, and user registration, might be unavailable.
  • Microsoft 365 admin center: Admins may face intermittent access issues, and actions taken within the platform might experience delays.

However, Microsoft reported recovery in the following services based on internal data and user feedback:

  • Microsoft Defender Antivirus Products (Defender, Defender for Endpoint, Defender Experts)
  • Microsoft Intune
  • Microsoft Office 365 applications (OneNote, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Windows 365, Viva Engage, Microsoft Purview)

"We're observing a steady improvement in service availability across multiple Microsoft 365 applications and services," Microsoft stated. "We continue to closely monitor data to ensure this positive trend persists as we implement mitigation efforts."
