Electrical Compliance:

Ensuring electrical safety and adherence to regulations is paramount in solar installations. South African law mandates that all electrical work, including solar and battery systems, be performed under the supervision of a registered Installation Electrician (IE) or, for DC installations, a three-phase IE or Master Installation Electrician (MIE).

To meet compliance standards, installations must conform to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10142-1: 2020, Edition 3. This standard outlines the requirements for electrical installations in South Africa.

Structural Compliance:

When modifying or installing solar panels on a roof, structural integrity is a critical concern. South African law stipulates that any structural alterations or additions, such as solar panels, must be undertaken under the design and supervision of a professionally registered civil engineer (Pr Eng) or technician (Pr Tech).

To ensure structural safety, installations should comply with SANS 10400-A. This standard provides guidelines for the design and construction of buildings and structures.

Fire Compliance:

Fire safety is another essential aspect of solar installations, especially when adding combustible materials like photovoltaic (PV) panels or DC dead zones to the roof. These additions require the oversight of a professionally registered civil engineer or technician to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

SANS 10400-T is the relevant standard for fire safety in buildings and structures. It outlines requirements for fire resistance, means of escape, and fire detection and suppression systems.

Training and Certification:

To equip professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to comply with electrical, structural, and fire regulations, we at WIAM Consulting offer comprehensive training courses. These courses are designed for electricians, architects, and engineers and cover the application of the National Building Regulations and the Electrical Installation Regulations as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 OF 1993.

The training focuses on the construction, maintenance, and compliance aspects of PV rooftop and battery backup systems. Contact us for more information on upcoming training dates.

By adhering to these regulations and participating in relevant training, registered electrical professionals can ensure the safety, efficiency, and longevity of solar installations in South Africa.
