What a lot of people don't know is that there is a mass producer of wood in the Hessequa Province. But let us discuss in short what type of wood is normally used for a Braai in the Western Cape.

Where to get the best wood to braai with?

Masterstok, are a big producer of braai wood that is available to resellers and to the public. Reselling in bulk, loads, and large consignments. The public are welcome to call ahead and to collect their loads either by car or pickup. 

What type of braai wood is available?

Masterstok, has a large variety of wood available. The majority of braai wood varies depending upon availability throughout the year. 

Rooikrans (Red Garland)

A great hardwood found mostly in Cape province. It’s very dense and dry, with a moisture content between 1 and 3%, and is a real all-rounder when it comes to braai. It is very popular in the Western Cape; It usually comes in log shapes and is also a great hardwood for a braai. Rooikrans is a tree originally from Australia brought to Cape Town as an ornamental tree in the 1800's and later used for dune stabilisation on the Cape Flats.

Black Wattle

An invasive plant that’s reddish in colour (despite the name). It’s softer than other hardwoods, with a moisture content between 5 and 10%. It burns very hot and long with glowing coals, and gives the meat a smoky taste. Thick pieces of wattle are great for hotter and longer fires, especially for a braai and the more thin pieces can be used to make a big flame, for something like a bonfire. Black wattle is also excellent wood for pizza ovens, potjies and fireplaces.
